Jaques Callot is a French artist born in 1592. I chose to look at this drawing in pen and ink called "Horse turned left with figure studies."
This drawing looks like a really intricate cartoon. The horse is drawn in a definitive line where as all the figures look more like shadows. The horse is the main focus in this drawing and it draws the eye straight to it. the horse is also more of a line drawing which is why I feel it looks more like a cartoon. Where as the people are defined by a shadow. the studies of the people show that he was trying out different thicknesses and darker lines to achieve the line he wanted.
I do like the horse in this drawing and I can appreciate the experimentation with the people but as a drawing all together I feel they do not match.
