Observational drawing: Leonard McComb

Leonard McComb

Leonard McComb is a British artist he was born in 1930. I chose to look at two of his drawings, "Tulip" and "portrait of Barbara."

"Tulips" is a pencil and watercolour piece that was created in 1975. It is a still life study of tulips, I find his drawings to be quite faint and light. I like the way he uses pencil to make marks, judging by the thickness and pattern of the mark I would say he used the pencil on its side to create the tone and texture he desired. I like the gradient from light to dark in the tone it makes certain parts of the piece stand out more. it also aids in creating the glass effect he used for the vase making the drawing look more three dimensional.

"Portrait of Barbara" was created in 1983 and was done in pen and ink. he still manages to create the same effect with the pen an ink as he does with the pencil. I think it looks realistic and detailed yet I still feel some of the feature like her eyes make her look more comical then real. I think it may have been the intensity and darkness of the marks that make the features look more exaggerate. I also like the way he uses a rubber to highlight the lighter areas of her.
overall I like his drawing technique I find the results it creates very interesting.
