Synthetic Cubism

Robert Delauney is a French painter famously associated with the Synthetic phase of Cubism. He was born on the 12th of April 1885 and died on the 25th of October 1941. Delauney's most famous piece of work from his cubism phase is "Tour Eiffel" painted in 1926. Delauney made the painting bright and abstract. He uses geometric shapes throughout the painting which make it look more abstract and a distinguishing characteristic when identifying cubism art. The colours are vivid and stand out and are contrasting. I like the way he uses bright colours to exaggerate the tone. I also like the unusual
view of the tower is painted from. It is like a three quarter birds eye view which makes the tower the focal point of the composition it also makes it look three dimensional. The paint is layered which gives a solid block of colour making the tower stand out. I like the painting because it is bright and cheerful. Fernand Lèger is  also a Synthetic cubism artist. He is French and is also known for printmaking film making and painting. He was born on the 4th of February 1881 and died on August the 17th 1955. One of the paintings by Lèger I like is called "The Railway Crossing" painted in 1919. This is very abstract and also bold like Delauney's painting. However in Léger's piece the tone is blended and detailed. The composition is very busy but the shapes are again very geometric. The colours are quite dull and cool but contrast which help distinguish the objects. The signs in the foreground are the first thing your eyes are drawn to because they are the focal points of the composition I like this painting because it is like a puzzle.
