Otto Dix

Otto Dix
Otto Dix is a famous German print maker. He was born on the 2nd of December 1891 and died the 25th of July 1969. So the war was a major influence on his work. The print I have chosen to talk about is the "Corpse of a Horse" which was completed in 1924. The print is sketchy yet detailed giving it a realistic feel. The subject matter of the dead horse is very meaningful and symbolises the forgotten suffering. He describes the print by saying "men were not the only victims of their savagery the war indiscriminately destroyed anything in its path." Showing that he intended to document every life lost that was overlooked. The sketchy form of the horse gives it a worn and broken texture emphasising the death of the horse. The dead horse being the main and only subject of focus makes you think how it died. The position of the horse clearly shows it was distressed when it died. It also makes you think of how important the animals were during the war and how their sacrifice was overlooked. I like the painting because of the depth of the subject and how it makes you think.
