Claude Monet

Claude Monet is a French Impressionist painter. He was born on the 14th November 1840 and died 5th of December 1926. Monet was famous for painting picturesque views of the French countryside. Monet also liked to use light, which was an an important part of inspiration. He looked at the same building or field and painted it at different times of the day in different weather conditions. This was to show exaduration of light and colour at different points of the day. Monet never used black but blended browns, blues and greens to create dark tone and shadows. Good examples of colour techniques would be in Monet's paintings of the ' Rouen Cathedral.' Monet sat through all weathers to create a series of paintings. This showed how the weather and time of day effects the light and colour therefore changing the artists perception of the image. Moneys paintings are very bright and slightly obscure. I like the way the layers of paint build up tone making it look more realistic. Monet leaves empty space in his paintings. He tends to fill the background and put one or two objects in the foreground which makes the eye focus on them more. I especially like Monet's 'Wheatstacks in sunset.' I like the bright build up of colours to emphasise the light. And the use of blue and white for the darker tones make it seem more realistic. I like the orange used on the 'Wheatstacks' it makes it seem as if it is glowing which makes them stand out. Monet is now an icon for impressionist art.
